Microsoft reneges on Windows 10 upgrades for all current Lumia phones - marshpabeggetur
Despite an earlier commitment to upgrade all Lumia Windows Earpiece 8 devices to Windows 10, Microsoft now says both phones will be odd bottom.
"Comparable any upgrade to a revolutionary platform, not every headphone will ascent or sustenanc every last possible Windows 10 features, and certain features and experiences will require more precocious future hardware," Microsoft wrote on its Lumia Conversations web log. "Our goal is for the absolute majority of the Lumia phones running Windows Phone 8 and 8.1 to join the Windows ecosystem along with an expected hundreds of millions of PCs, tablets and other devices running the next generation of Windows."
That statement runs contrary to a post from Microsoft's Lumia Twitter invoice in Nov, which said upgrades would equal available for "entirely Lumia Windows Phone 8 devices." In so far, there's no word along which devices won't make the cut off, and which features may not work on older hardware.
Windows 10 for smartphones isn't a major difference from Windows Phone 8, but adds many usable features much as a floating keyboard for one-handed use, universal speech-to-text, Skype consolidation in the electronic messaging app, actionable notifications, an expanded heel of spry settings toggles and a congested-featured version of Microsoft Office. It's hoped-for to arrive later this year, with a Technical Preview launching in the coming weeks.
Why this matters: Microsoft's record for upgrading Windows Phones is already spotty, having abandoned all Windows Earpiece 7 users with Windows Telephone set 8, and allowing a handful of carriers to stall the Windows Phone 8.1 upgrade for certain phones. But at least in those cases, Microsoft had excuses: Windows Phone 8 switched to a unused kernel that was incompatible with the previous version, and aircraft carrier holdups aren't really Microsoft's fault. In the case of Windows 10, Microsoft simply successful a promise it couldn't observe.
UPDATE: A report by Windows Bifocal suggests Microsoft's web log post is just posturing in respect to wireless carriers. The site says each Windows Phone 8 and high Lumia devices will so be bailable for an climb, though the closing decision will come down to carriers, who don't always wee-wee the feat to keep their phones current. As with before, Microsoft could offer a "developer preview" Eastern Samoa a workaround, which would live better than cypher but hardly ideal for the average user.
